Francesco de Prezzo explores physical presence and spatial awareness through his art.

By exploring notions of space and time he aims to render the ephemeral tangible and to engage concepts of existence and identity.

INSPIRATION

Attempting to study the materials that comprise the space around us has always been Francesco’s obsession: ‘It’s simple, we are surrounded by space’. The versatility of this topic, one without limits and without parameters, allows the artist to experiment with evolving forms, shapes and images. Francesco explains the ‘bittersweet’, a threshold between pleasure and pain, as central to his work. It is defined as a spatial condition, difficult to rationalise, in which mental satisfaction coincides with the pain caused by memories and principles of struggle.

VISION

Plus icon

Francesco’s vision is based on the concept of temporal and spatial breaks: he painstakingly and precisely paints still life only to then abruptly erase it with a layer of white varnish. By concealing his paintings under this layer he questions time (a lot of time to paint - very little time to conceal) and space (the white monochrome only exists because of the painting beneath). The creative process becomes ritualistic, exposing and covering in continuity to reflect on the existence of things themselves.

PAST PROJECTS

Begun in 2014, Null Serie is epitomises Francesco’s artistic vision. These painted pieces are thus transcribed not only in the bi-dimensional, as on canvas, but also in the tri-dimensional, as space defining structures. Past works cover various mediums to facilitate the exploration of different creative and conceptual tangents: Francesco has worked in performance art, sculpture and painting. E.N.F.A.S.I. spearheads his performance works, exploring the space occupied by the individual and documented in video format. Sculptural works, including Never Dance Before, explore the relationships between entities and how objects interact within a defined space.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Francesco’s most recent installations denote a return to a gestural approach to materials, typical to his early works. His current project There Was Here First, presents a carefully curated, cohesive discourse. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with various contributors including Alberto Zanchetta, Marine Tanguy, Paolo Canevari and Nicola Maffessoni.

FUTURE PROJECTS

Francesco’s career projection is centered on the continuation of his research. By developing his academic dialogues his museum-quality works and theses will secure institutional endorsement.

12/05/2016 IL DIALOGO DI DE PREZZO CON LE TRACCE DEL MUSIL

Brescia Oggi, 12th May 2016
